It is the question every homeowner asks before signing, and it deserves a straighter answer than the industry usually gives. Yes, spray foam reduces cooling costs in a Houston home. No, we will not tell you by what percentage, and you should be cautious of anyone who does.
Why we will not quote you a percentage
A savings figure is only meaningful if it comes from your house. It depends on the age and efficiency of your equipment, the condition and location of your ducts, your window area and orientation, how much shade you have, how many people live there and what you set the thermostat to.
Two identical houses on the same street can produce very different numbers. A contractor quoting a flat percentage before seeing your building is selling, not estimating. What we can do is explain the mechanism honestly, so you can judge whether it applies to you.
The three mechanisms that produce the saving
1. Getting the ducts out of the heat
This is the big one in Houston and it is frequently overlooked. In most homes here the ductwork and air handler sit in an attic that runs 130 to 150 degrees. Conditioned air loses capacity crossing that space, and every duct leak dumps cooled air into the attic while pulling hot attic air back into the return.
Spraying the roof deck brings the attic inside the conditioned envelope. The ducts are then in a space close to house temperature and those losses largely stop. In duct-in-attic homes, this single change usually accounts for the majority of the improvement.
2. Stopping air leakage
Traditional insulation slows conduction but does nothing about air movement. Foam is applied as a liquid and seals as it expands, so it addresses both. In a climate where hot humid air is pushing inward for eight months a year, removing that flow removes a continuous load.
3. Reducing the humidity load
Your air conditioner spends a large share of its capacity condensing water out of infiltrating air. Less infiltration means less moisture to remove, which means shorter run times, and often means the house feels comfortable at a higher thermostat setting. That last effect is real and rarely counted.
Where the return is strongest
- Ductwork in the attic. The clearest case, and the most common in Houston.
- Two story homes with an upstairs that never keeps up.
- Older homes where the existing insulation has settled and the ceiling was never sealed.
- Metal buildings, where foam also stops condensation damage on top of the energy saving.
- Homes you intend to keep. Foam is permanent, so a longer horizon changes the math substantially.
Where the return is weaker
We would rather tell you this before you spend the money:
- Ducts already in conditioned space. The largest mechanism does not apply, and air sealing plus blown fiberglass may deliver most of the benefit for far less.
- A recently sealed and well insulated envelope. You have already captured most of what is available.
- A house you are selling within a year. The energy saving will not accrue to you, though the condition of the home may still help the sale.
- A roof near the end of its life. Replace it first. Spraying the underside of a deck about to be torn off is money spent twice.
Savings that are not on the electric bill
Focusing only on kilowatt hours undercounts what the work does:
- Equipment life. A system running at the edge of capacity all summer wears faster than one that cycles normally.
- Right sizing at replacement. A sealed envelope can let your HVAC contractor specify smaller equipment, which is a direct capital saving.
- Moisture damage avoided. Particularly in metal buildings and crawl spaces.
- Rooms you can actually use. Hard to price, easy to feel.
- No replacement cycle. Foam does not settle or need topping up.
How to judge it for your own house
Pull twelve months of electric bills and look at the gap between your winter baseline and your July and August peaks. That gap is broadly your cooling cost. Then ask where your ducts run. If the answer is the attic, the mechanisms above apply to you strongly. If not, ask us about the cheaper route first.

Is closed cell better for saving money than open cell?
Not necessarily. Closed cell gives more R per inch, but across a roof deck where depth is free, open cell delivers the same air sealing benefit for less money. The right choice depends on the assembly.
Will it help in winter too?
Yes, though the heating season here is short, so the summer saving dominates. A sealed envelope works in both directions.
Do I need to do the whole house at once?
