Almost all of them have ductwork sitting directly in the attic, which is why the upstairs and the bonus room over the garage are the two comfort complaints we hear most. The second thing we find in Katy is builder grade blown insulation that has settled unevenly, sitting over a ceiling plane full of unsealed penetrations. Can lights, bath fans and the top plates over interior walls all leak air, all day. That is why the depth written on the original insulation certificate almost never matches what the house is actually delivering by the time we see it.
On a two storey plan the answer is usually not more material on the attic floor. Moving the insulation boundary up to the roof deck brings the ductwork and the air handler inside conditioned space, which is what finally settles the difference between the downstairs and the upstairs. We will tell you at the inspection whether your attic is a candidate for that, or whether the floor is the better place to spend.
